Genetic Engineered Pots (2021 - Present)
The duality of human desire to control nature...
The current alarming context of climate crisis, Bio-technology scientists are being tasked to help tackle many crucial problems especially rising temperatures, severe weather changes, deforestation, poor food harvest. The advances in Bio-engineering technology has created endless incredible solutions, helping to reverse the crisis; the same technology, on the contrary, has raised concerns from public over ethical and moral principles.
Wei Keong Tan started a long running project of creating ‘Genetic Engineered Pots’ in 2020, where he used basic ceramic pots as ‘test subjects’ in an experiment to address common issues faced by the climate crisis. A series of ceramic pots were created with the scientific concept of Bio-engineering technology in DNA editing. This playful approach was set to alter and enhance their physical functionalities and to address common issues faced by climate crisis — efficiency, defence, sustainability and tolerance. Through these experiments, he aims to challenge everyone’s perspective about the Nature we see around us.
